Persol 649 Resina e Sale Sunglasses | Blue Gradient Lenses | Iconic Italian Frame | Never Worn
If the 714 is the frame Steve McQueen made famous, the 649 is the one Italy made its own.
The Persol 649 was originally designed in 1957 for tram drivers in Turin — a wide, generous pilot shape that shielded the eyes from the sun and wind without sacrificing clarity or comfort. It has been in uninterrupted production ever since, worn by everyone from Marcello Mastroianni to the Italian countryside, and it remains the most purely Italian sunglass ever made.
The Resina e Sale colourway — "resin and salt" — is one of Persol's most celebrated: a warm, striped amber-brown acetate with lighter tones running through it like sunlight through honey, the colours flowing in the characteristic stripped pattern that gives this colourway its name and its character. Against it, the blue gradient lenses create the combination Persol has always understood better than anyone: warm earth, cool sky. Deep slate blue at the top fading to a clear, airy blue at the base.
The 649 keyhole bridge, the silver Persol arrow, the Meflecto temples. Everything exactly as it has always been.
For the person who wants the one that started it all.
